D.C. Army National Guard

The D.C. Army National Guard is the Army component of the D.C. National Guard. Formed in 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson to defend the newly created District of Columbia, the D.C. Army National Guard is led by a Commanding General as opposed to an Adjutant General (like other states) and is the only Army National Guard state-level organization activated by the President of the United States for natural and civil emergencies.


Joint Forces Headquarters, District of Columbia Army National Guard, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment supports command and control and provides oversight and coordination for the Joint Force Headquarters staff sections in support of all Army and Army-Air Operations.


The headquarters-level support all assigned soldiers within in the organization.  Also it provides world-class support for Presidential Inaugurations and related National Special Security Events throughout the inaugural period, continuing the tradition of military participation in the Presidential Inauguration of the Commander-in-Chief dating back to the Inauguration of George Washington in 1789.

D.C. Air National Guard

The D.C. Air National Guard is an Air Force reserve component organization of the D.C. National Guard. The origins date to April 10, 1941 with the establishment of the 121st Observation Squadron and is oldest unit of the D.C. Air National Guard. It is one of the 29 original National Guard Observation Squadrons of the Army National Guard formed before World War II. As a federal district, the units of the D.C. Air National Guard are under the direct jurisdiction of the President of the United States through the office of the Commanding General, D.C. National Guard, for natural and civil emergencies.
