WASHINGTON –
U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Anthony D. Sims assumed responsibility as the District of Columbia Air National Guard state command chief from U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Sean M. Larson during a change of responsibility ceremony at the D.C. Armory Nov. 9, 2025. Sims succeeds Chief Master Sgt. Sean M. Larson, who concludes an extraordinary 39-year career of service.
The ceremony, attended by Airmen, Soldiers, families, and distinguished guests from across the National Guard, marked a moment of continuity and transition within the D.C. Air National Guard’s senior enlisted leadership.
Brig. Gen. Matthew R. McDonough presided over the event, highlighting the critical role of the State Command Chief in shaping enlisted readiness, culture, and professional development.
“Today, we gather for a significant occasion, the change of responsibility ceremony for our state command chief,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew R. McDonough, commander, 113th Wing, D.C. National Guard. “This event represents continuity and leadership, trust, and the strength of the enlisted core that keeps our organization grounded and mission-ready.”
Sims most recently served as the Senior Enlisted Leader, Joint Force Headquarters-District of Columbia National Guard, where he advised on joint force readiness and support a wide spectrum of civil support missions. Prior to that, he served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Maryland National Guard, overseeing enlisted development, strategic guidance, and integration across the state’s Army and Air components.
In his remarks, Sims expressed gratitude for the opportunity to leader the D.C. ANG enlisted force.
“My vision is to foster growth and mentorship and make D.C. a place where others want to come,” said Sims. “I want to foster a culture of teamwork, innovation, and excellence. By keeping those values in sight, I know we can accomplish anything."
Larson, who served as State Command Chief since 2023, was recognized for decades of leadership, innovation, and advocacy on behalf of enlisted personnel. Throughout his 39 years in uniform, Larson held key positions across the wing and state headquarters, shaping professional development programs, strengthening community partnerships, and guiding the force through historic domestic operations and mobilizations.
.“To the Airmen and Soldiers of this Guard, thank you for showing up every day ready to serve, ready to adapt, and ready to represent the best of the District and this country,” said Larson. “As I pass responsibility to Chief Sims, I do so with confidence. The story of the D.C. Guard continues, written by people who serve not for recognition, but for purpose.”
