Air Force Cyber Security Officer Sworn-in as Inspector General of D.C. National Guard

By Ayan Sheikh | D.C. National Guard

The District of Columbia National Guard welcomed U.S. Air Force Lt. Col Jennifer Sayers, an active-duty cyberspace operations officer, as its new State Inspector General following her recent graduation from The Inspector General School.

Lt. Col Sayers commissioned in 2007 through ROTC at the University of Notre Dame and has spent most of her career in the communications and cyber field, including a recent assignment with the Department of the Air Force Chief Information Officer at the Pentagon.

She now fills one of just nine Air Force-designated State/Territory/District Inspector General (IG) positions across the nation. The remaining 45 are filled by U.S. Army personnel.

“I’m grateful that I could join this amazing team,” said Lt. Col Sayers.

Her three-week training at TIGS — The Inspector General School — covered the four core IG functions: inspections, assistance, investigations, and teach and train. After completing the course and taking the oath with the Commanding General, she became a full-fledged Inspector General.

“This is my first IG assignment, and I couldn’t be more excited to support the Soldiers and Airmen of the D.C. Guard,” she said. “The IG plays a critical role in maintaining readiness and supporting warfighter effectiveness. We are here to help, and communication with the IG is protected by law.”

Following her IG tour, Sayers plans on returning to the Air Force to continue her service as a cyberspace operations officer.
