WASHINGTON –
On May 3, we celebrate the 223rd Birthday of the District of Columbia National Guard. This drill weekend should serve as a reminder of a tradition that links us to D.C. Militia members who wore the uniform before us—heritage rooted in courage, discipline, loyalty, perseverance, respect, trust, and adaptability. Like the early patriots of 1802 who raised their hand to volunteer, we are comprised of 2,400 Soldiers and Airmen who answer a call to Army and Air combat readiness, homeland defense, partnership building, and community response. Thank you for being a testament to the unwavering spirit of patriotism, selflessness, and duty, and for defending the values, ideals and freedoms the United States is recognized for around the world.
You stand on the shoulders of men and women who have served proudly and distinctively in every major conflict our nation has faced, including the Civil War, both World Wars, Vietnam, Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and the ongoing mission in support of CENTCOM. More recently, our members have also served in support of the Southwest Border mission. All of us are united by an oath to the Constitution, a love for our country and District, and a willingness to sacrifice for something greater than ourselves. And you serve as a reminder of our promise to remain “Always Ready, Always There”!
Finally, even amid increased training, mobilizations and missions, the D.C. National Guard remains predominantly comprised of part-time Soldiers and Airmen. I personally want to thank you for continuing to fill the role of parent, spouse, teacher, police officer, first responder, nurse, lawyer, doctor, counselor, pastor, community leader, and role model—still serving country and community with the same sense of duty and honor. I consider it an honor to serve alongside you and we stand together, ready to face the threats of today, and prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
Happy 223rd Birthday, Capital Guardians! #GuardianPride #SecondtoNone
