U.S. Air Force Major General Sherrie L. McCandless assumed her duties as interim Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard today, a position that she will fill until President Biden appoints a successor.
McCandless, previously the Director of the National Guard Bureau's Office of Legislative Liaison, succeeds U.S. Army Major General William J. Walker who departed the position to become the Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I feel especially honored to serve again alongside the men and women of the D.C. National Guard,” said McCandless. “Our Soldiers, Airmen and Civilians perform one of the most unique and diverse mission sets in the National Guard.”
More than 2,700 Soldiers and Airmen serve in the D.C. National Guard and are proud to be from the communities they protect and serve.
