Army Brig. Gen. Aaron R. Dean II, the adjutant general, D.C. National Guard (DCNG), and District of Columbia ESGR state chair, Stanley Williams, presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award to the director and deputy director of D.C. Department of Human Services (DHS), Laura Zeilinger and David Ross, for their support and dedication to those who serve. 
Staff Sgt. Kevin Valentine, 715th Public Affairs Detachment, DCNG, who also works with DHS as the director of communications and outreach, nominated Zeilinger and Ross after notifying them that he had to go on a month-long deployment overseas. He had only worked at DHS for a few months and explained that he was seamlessly supported throughout the process.

According to esgr.mil, ESGR is a Department of Defense office that was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment.

U.S. Soldiers from the Alabama Army National Guard arrive at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, to support the Joint Task Force–District of Columbia’s security mission in Southeast D.C. with foot patrols and medic support. About 2,300 National Guard members are supporting the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission providing critical support to the D.C.
