Washington D.C. - (March 18, 2022) -- For the first time in more than a decade, the D.C. Army National Guard has opened a storefront recruiting office in the District.

“Today begins a new era in the District of Columbia and for the Capital Guardians who have served it for almost 220 years,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Sherrie McCandless, commanding general of the D.C. National Guard (DCNG). “The D.C. National Guard is part of this vibrant and diverse community. We needed an Army National Guard recruiting office in the heart of the District.”

McCandless, current and former senior DCNG leaders, representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and officials from the D.C. government cut the ribbon today on the 2,093-square-foot office located at 2213 14th Street NW in downtown Washington.

“We looked at areas with strong potential for recruiting men and women who live and work in the District,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Amber Ellison, commander of DCNG’s Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion. “The office needed maximum public visibility, a central location with easy, walk-in access, and a diverse surrounding community representative of the District.”

Until today, the D.C. Army National Guard only had an office at the D.C. Armory where entry is controlled. Its last storefront recruiting office, which closed in 2010, was at 3021 Georgia Avenue NW. DCNG expects to benefit from foot traffic at the new storefront office where it will be much easier for people to speak to a recruiter. The office will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Army National Guard focuses on recruiting young adults ages 17 to 35 to include high school juniors, seniors, college students or anyone looking to serve their country and their community while gaining experience in a variety of career fields.

DCNG will hold an open house at the new recruiting office on Friday, April 15, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
