Participants of the 2024 Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program attend orientation at the D.C. Armory, June 26. The cohort, comprised of young adults age 18-21, will gain exposure in approx. a dozen work-centers within the D.C. National Guard and D.C. Government Operations-DCNG until Aug. 2. Orientation day included meetings with Marcus Hunt, director, D.C. Government Operations-DCNG, and Maj. Gen. John C. Andonie, Commanding General (interim), D.C. National Guard. Participants also received a tour of the D.C. National Guard Museum highlighting 222-years of service to the nation and District.

The D.C. National Guard's Maj. Gen. John C. Andonie, commanding general (interim), swears in Lt. Col. Nushat Thomas as the new deputy inspector general at the D.C. Armory on June 8, 2024. Thomas assumed the position following the retirement of Lt. Col. Tera Powell in early spring 2024 after 24 years of service.

The Comprehensive Integrated Prevention Plan (CIPP) is the D.C. National Guard's strategic plan to influence the climate of the organization and its members. Over the next six to nine months, the Integrated Resilience Operations (IRO) team will work on shared solutions to better assess and act on climate risk factors and DEOCS trends. The goal is to reinforce positive actions and keep members engaged.

80th Anniversary of D-Day: D.C. Guardsmen among the first Allied forces in Normandy invasion

A collection of World War II artifacts is on display in the District of Columbia National Guard Museum highlighting the contributions of eight mobilized units in support of the war in Europe, the Pacific and at home, June 5, 2024. Three units landed on Omaha Beach and fought in the Battle of Normandy or Operation Overlord (D-Day): The 29th Military Police Platoon (MP PLT), Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 29th Infantry Division (29ID), and the 121st Engineer Combat Battalion (ECB).

Reflections on Sgt. Richard Sherman: A life still living through social connection

Members of the 1st Battalion 5th Infantry Regiment "Bobcats" meet for a 20th anniversary of their deployment to Mosul, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and commemorate the 19th anniversary of the passing of their colleague, Sgt. Stephen R. Sherman, who was killed in action by an improvised explosive device, on Feb. 3, at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va. The Bobcats provided a wreath that was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Sherman’s mother who was accompanied by the Sentinels of the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment – The Old Guard. After laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Sherman’s honor, the Bobcats paid tribute to Sherman, and his surviving mother, by visiting his headstone and recalling stories of Sherman. Sherman’s mother closed the commemorative gathering by distributing coins dedicated to Sherman’s memory.

In recognition of Earth Day, members of the District of Columbia National Guard and D.C. Operations-DCNG teamed for an Earth Day cleanup at Fort Dupont Park in Washington, D.C., on April 18, 2024.  The D.C. National Guard's Environmental Office promotes environmental stewardship and collaborated with the U.S. National Park Service to determine what areas in the District could best utilize volunteer support.  Earth Day is celebrated globally on April 22.
