April 26, 2024
Members of the 1st Battalion 5th Infantry Regiment "Bobcats" meet for a 20th anniversary of their deployment to Mosul, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and commemorate the 19th anniversary of the passing of their colleague, Sgt. Stephen R. Sherman, who was killed in action by an improvised explosive device, on Feb. 3, at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va. The Bobcats provided a wreath that was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Sherman’s mother who was accompanied by the Sentinels of the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment – The Old Guard. After laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Sherman’s honor, the Bobcats paid tribute to Sherman, and his surviving mother, by visiting his headstone and recalling stories of Sherman. Sherman’s mother closed the commemorative gathering by distributing coins dedicated to Sherman’s memory.
